Description and methods employed (what, how, where and when)[edit]

What[edit]

The first objective of Action D4 is to create awareness about the project‘s main objectives and encourage involvement from bottom-up. Citizens' participation is a fundamental element for the success of IESS strategy while policy-makers interest is necessary for replication of the IESS model. Action D4 will make available all the tools, guidelines and workflows developed within the Project to as broad an audience as possible.

Other specific objectives are: to communicate information about the project and its implementation status; to coordinate communication activities with other relevant stakeholder network; to disseminate the results of the project; to produce documentation and dissemination material; to organise events for different targets and during all the project life-time.

A detailed communication plan will be developed at the beginning of the activities in order to maximize the impact of the project, during both the implementation period and at the end of the activities. GRANT will be supported by a Communication agency having a proven track record in managing environmental communication campaigns. In this way the whole communication campaign will be based on an integrated strategy that hopefully will concur to amplify the results.

This action is also associated with the creation of a framework of visual identity, image and messages that belongs to the general strategy of communication of project activities.

This action belongs to D - Communication and dissemination actions set of Actions.

How[edit]

The coordinator, GRANT will have a strong control of the whole action, delegating technical and specialistic issue to the Communication Agency and maintain a continuous relationship with all the partners through the Steering Committee. The activity will start with the definition of the Communication Plan, that include the definition and production of the definitive IESS logo, templates and rules (overall look and feel) but also guidelines for publicity and formats.

According to the various target communities, different dissemination strategies have to be applied. A communication kit will be developed including brochures/leaflets, webcasts, apps. A web site will be developed (see D1) and visibile information board will inform citizens about the project.

Micro targeted information campaign will be organized (with involvement of local radio and tv channels) to gradually involve people about the start up of new services (carpooling, walking buses, ecc.) or call for resilience and adaptation microprojects (land, energy, water)to be proposed or communicated to IESS Climate Change Committee.

IESS leaflets will provide basic factual information and the address (mailing address or web site) where further information can be found. Posters will be used to inform citizens about IESS activities. All material produced in paper form should also be made available in electronic form, so that it can be sent by e-mail and/or uploaded on the IESS Website.

The Launch Conference will be held in GRANT to present the IESS Project to the Press (regional and national) and interested stakeholders. At least 60 participants will attend the Launch conference including political and technical authorities. The Launch Conference should also be the occasion to start gather different stakeholders around different themes and to collect specific information for the prosecution of the activities and the involvement of the main target groups to the activities.

The final event will be held on 04/08/17. The foreseen public participation to the final conference is of 90 qualified persons attending. The conference will present the results of the IESS project, being open to local European and National decision makers and a variety of stakeholders. Prominent speakers will be invited to testify other interesting experiences about climate change and local communities involvment.

Press release will be prepared in both occasions and sent to national papers and reputed reviews.

The press releases (on A4 pages) will be a useful contribution to the communication activities and will also be issued at the start of all actions or set of actions with a common format with heading, a strong leading paragraph summarising the essential facts, the main body of the story, quotes, some background information, and contact details for further information.

Delegate packages will also be prepared and distributed. Towards the two main groups of stakeholders citizens and policy-makers specific communication initiatives are foreseen.

Specific initiatives will involve IESS territory schools, starting from primary cicle given that children entering the educational system when IESS will start, will be reaching adulthood and coping with the world of 2030, and probably will afford difficult challenges shaping their future. Schools will be the natural and direct target of the initiatives related to dissemination activities related to the launch of walking bus and bicycle trains initiatives, that will involve also educators and parents. IESS partners agree that it is of fundamental importance to engage Moreover, a public competition among schools will be organised with the aim to let children and youth people express their opinion about how they perceive their future and suggest "their ways" to cope with, adapt to and mitigate climate change. The competion will be open to different contributions (novels, drawings, photos, videos, podcasts..). A Final Exhibition and an awards ceremony will be organised in June 2017.

Another important part of the communication strategy is to identify communication channels with policy-makers. To present and share methodologies and resul,ts 3 technical workshops (11/04/15; 28/08/17; 05/06/17) will be organized by the consortium partners. The workshops will focus on the approaches of the project, lessons-learned and best practises and will particulary focus on the role of small communities and small towns to support the identification of original approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation strategy.
